Prospective 21e siècle is the French series devoted to electroacoustic and avant-garde music curated by François Bayle and Pierre Henry. It was launched in 1967, quickly won its place as the most avant-garde, the most revolutionary of all record collections: "revolutionary" in its presentation (metallized record sleeves in keeping with their contents), in its exclusive repertory - concrete, electronic and experimental music - and in its price, putting it within the reach of all, and especially of young people, who are passionately interested in new sonic effects.
The series was notable for using on its covers the "Procédé Heliophore" which engraves patterns on aluminum foil that cause optical effects. Some later pressings replaced the foil with standard gray ink. Although the series was French, there are editions of some titles that were released in The Netherlands, England, Spain and Japan. Editions from before 1972 are published by BIEM, after 1972 the rights society was SACEM.
Most of the "Prospective" records have been best-sellers ever since they were issued, and they were distributed in many countries of the world with the success they meet in France.
